Time Goes MARCHing On!

I suppose 3 months into my official gig as [h]it lister, and having worked on the thing in some way for half a year, it’s not a “new” thing anymore. But still, it’s still only the fifth or sixth time I’ve done it, so it’s still novel for me.

Anyhoo…March! March is a time to be aware of time; it’s daylight savings time- so make sure to “Spring Ahead” before bedtime on the 13th. March has no “day off” holidays, but it is my birthday month, so I’m working on it. Also, it’s a month for madness, as evidenced by basketball and hares. (You either get that joke or need to do some Googlin’! Or it just wasn’t a good joke…)

This month at Sequential Art Gallery

[328 NW Broadway #113]

Sequential Art Gallery is pleased to present the work of M. Lamkins. “The New Varsity” is the story of the rise and fall of a small local music venue, told through show posters and written clues. From the grand opening in January to the final, tragic end in December, viewers can explore the timeline and follow the ups and downs, the fights and fumbles, and the mystery behind the closed doors of this fictional house of music. “The New Varsity” opens First Thursday, March 4, 2010, from 6-10pm.

M. Lamkins is a musician and artist based in Portland, Oregon. She retired from the world of employed software engineer to the exciting and lucrative life of the unemployed musician (and also learned to knit). When she is not adding to her vast useless knowledge of anglophile porn and science fiction trivia, she writes and performs music in Portland. She is also the co-host of the Someday:Incubator, a monthly curated performance showcase at Someday Lounge.

CLOSES: Saturday, March 27, 2010; after 5pm

PORTLAND, OREGON – For the month of March, Sequential Art Gallery is pleased to present the work of M.

Sequential Art Gallery + Studio is located in Old Town Chinatown at the Everett Station Lofts, 328 NW Broadway #113. Open for regular gallery hours and gaming every Saturday (11am-5pm) or by appointment. The gallery showcases local artists who explore the concept of sequential art, which is loosely defined as using consecutive images to tell a story. Curated by Kaebel JK Hashitani and Merrick Monroe.

Recently Sequential Art’s founder and co-curator, Kaebel Hashitani, and Chris Haberman of Portland City Art, met up in a TV studio to be interviewed by Rick Emmerson, host of Outlook Portland. Chris and Kaebel were asked to appear on the show to discuss the Portland art scene, how they’ve experienced it changing and evolving over the past several years, and what it’s like to be a professional artist. Outlook Portland leaked this behind-the-scenes shot of the taping via their Twitter:

The episode is set to air Sunday, February 28 2010, at 6:30am on NW32. If you’re anything like Kaebel, you probably didn’t realize there was such a thing as 6:30am on a Sunday… the episode will also be uploaded to YouTube, and we’ll make sure to post an update when that goes online.

This was not Kaebel’s first appearance on Outlook Portland; he also visited the studio back in April 2009 alongside Aaron Duraan of Geek In The City. The trio discussed comic book art and their involvement with the Stumptown Comics Foundation, of which Kaebel is the president. Because the Internet is awesome, you can watch that episode now!

I’m really absent-minded when it comes to providing information sometimes. Like now. Here we are, a month into 2010, and there are a few major things concerning the gallery that I’ve yet to address publicly. If you don’t mind, I’d like to take a moment and do that now.

Acknowledgements

Anyone who’s attended any event at the gallery knows that the gallery has never been a “one man” operation. In fact, over the past four & a half years of First Thursdays and numerous other related events, a veritable legion of friends have volunteered their time, efforts, energy, blood, sweat, tears and love to make sure every event is a success. I’d like to acknowledge them by name, and thank them publicly:
Mary-Suzanne Lamkins, Molly Lindsay, Melissa Armstrong, Vanessa Henerty, Sarah Jane Renner, Courtney Garrison, Christina “Blue” Crow, N. David Owens, Frank Lopez, James W. McHenry III, David Lamkins, Matthew Clark, Charles Kenshol, Kristin Hoffman, Talena Shields, Teressa Barsotti, Daniyel Hicks, Shinichi Moriyama, Susan Moriyama, Nikki Traino, Nick Falbo, Drew Woods, Tricia Beck, Amanda Thorson, Isaias Soto, Brenna Zedan, Chase Allgood, Megan Skye Hale, Myrrh Larsen, John C. Worsley III, Aaron Duran, Angela Kelley, Shannon Stewart, Todd Brabander, and Benja Barker.

Announcements

I’d like to officially announce the arrival of the gallery’s new co-curator, MERRICK MONROE. With a background in graphic design, photography, fine arts, and programming (note from Merrick: Actually, I just code websites… not the same as programming…), she has revitalized the gallery’s online presence, writes our press releases, and is integral in First Thursday preparation & events. And most recently, she has enabled the gallery to live-stream First Thursday events (Sequential Art Gallery + Studio on Ustream.tv). Those of you who follow the gallery’s activity online are already aware of Miss Monroe’s work.

Additionally, I’d like to reintroduce RICH VAIL MACKIN, the new author of The [h]IT List. Mr. Vail Mackin is a musician, performance artist, fine artist, writer, and very active in the “Keep Portland Weird” culture. He inherited the somewhat Herculean duty of compiling all First Thursday activities from Melissa Armstrong, and has risen to the task admirably.

Please feel free to introduce yourself to Merrick and Rich, either at First Thursday or online.

Lastly…

Thank you to every single one of you, patrons and artists alike, for supporting Sequential Art Gallery + Studio all this time. I couldn’t have done any of this without your support. Really, really.

Thanks for allowing me a moment of your time.

- Kaebel JK Hashitani

Below, I’ve compiled my personal picks, and they are GEEKTASTIC! Not one, but TWO midnight movies this month, including a screening of “Evil Dead”; Stumptown Underground’s latest issue & release party; the latest from Wanderlust Circus; live music combined w/ life drawing; Incubator, Geek Trivia, and Adult Game Night.

Enjoy!

CORT & FATBOY’S MIDNIGHT MOVIE

“Road House”
Friday, February 5th · 11pm-1am
Bagdad Theater · 3702 SE Hawthorne Blvd

Come honor the life of The Swayze by watching him in one of the most ridiculously cheesy, questionably masculine and often unintentionally funny action flicks of the 80s. For god sakes, it’s Patrick Swayze. Are you really gong to tell me there is something better happening in this town than an hour an a half of a shirtless and mulleted Swayze dance fighting to Jeff Healey music? Because I can promise you, there is not.

Tell your friends, so long as those friends are 21 or older. Three bucks gets you into a movie that you can only see these days on TBS late at night, censored and cut for commercials. But NOT at the Bagdad.

And if you want to bring a Ouija board in an attempt to summon the spirit of Patrick Swayze, who are we to stop you? [Cort Webber]

DRAW MY GIRLFRIEND & The BLAIR RICH PROJECT

Weekly Life Drawing & Live Music Event
Wednesdays · 6:30-9:30pm
Muddy Waters Community House · 2908 SE Belmont St

The Blair Rich Project continues their weekly residence at Draw My Girlfriend, a life drawing and live music event at Muddy Waters CommunityHouse at SE 29th and Belmont! Starts every Wednesday around 7 (in reality).

This event is coming together swimmingly with more lovely models and the addition of kitchen-table blues outfit, Dirty Little Christmas, and folk-metal virtuoso, Radiate. As always, my cohost Dingo Dizmal brings it with tampon cannons, hot dice, and other shenanigans. Blair-Rich Project usually goes on sometime between 9 and 10, but it’s definitely worth experiencing the whole enchilada.

As always, participants/audience are encouraged to bring art supplies and draw, and enjoy Muddy Waters sundry lovely treats.

Draw, drink and be merry!!! [Rich & Blair Vail-Mackin]

TFAW GEEK TRIVIA NIGHT

Challenge of the SuperGeeks!
Every other Tuesday · 2/9 & 2/23 · Starts @ 7pm
Vendetta · 4306 N. Williams Ave

Things From Another World continues to present Geek Trivia Night, hosted by Vendetta. Do YOU have what it takes to walk away with prestige, prizes, and the infamy of being the Geekiest Geek in all of Geek Town?

“EVIL DEAD” RETURNS!

Presented in 35mm Splendor by GEEK IN THE CITY!
Friday, February 12th · 11pm-1am
Bagdad Theater · 3702 SE Hawthorne Blvd

Greetings programs! Let us just get straight to the point – Sam Raimi’s masterpiece of terror returns to Portland on February 12, 2010 at the Bagdad Theater at 11:00pm

For a mere $5, you can see the film that Roger Ebert declared “One of the most deplorable movies ever made”, while Stephen King called it “The most ferociously original horror film of the year.” I ask you, when it comes to scaring the holy crap out of you, who you gonna’ believe? The man that hailed Tomb Raider as a “wild and fun ride” or the master of modern horror?

Yeah, that’s what I thought ya’ primitive screwheads!

This is no DVD popped into a player and projected onto the big screen. No my friends, this is the original 35mm print. And, when I say the “Original 35mm Print”, I ain’t joking. This is the print. This is Sam Raimi’s personal damn print! You read right suckas. Sam Raimi has graciously loaned Sage Stallone and Murawski of Grindhouse Releasing the rights to run this classic nasty flick across our fine union. Taken from the Chin’s mouth: “Nothing can prepare an audience for what they
are about to see, because nothing punishes an audience like EVIL DEAD – especially on the big screen,” says Bruce Campbell. “I’m really glad it’s back. People are gonna be hurt.”

Tell your friends. Tell your enemies. Tell your priest. The Evil Dead has returned to Portland “Frakking” Oregon on Friday February 12, 2010 at 11:00pm. Keep tuning into Geek In The City and GeekintheCity Radio for more details. [Aaron Duran]

SOMEDAY INCUBATOR

Curated Arts Showcase · By Myrrh Larsen & Mary-Suzanne
Tuesday, February 16th · 9pm-Midnight(ish)
Someday Lounge · 125 NW 5th Ave

Someday Incubator is a monthly free event at Someday Lounge, in the heart of the Old Town neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. First conceived as an insiders-only “open mic” for the fringe arts scene, Someday Incubator has evolved into a curated showcase of some of the city’s most promising and ambitious performance works-in-progress. Each month, supportive audiences are treated to an assortment of acts ranging from music to theatre, dance, live visual art, shadow puppetry, comedy, and abstract performance art. Incubator is free, 21+, and begins at 9pm. Someday Lounge is located at 125 NW 5th, downtown between Couch and Davis. The venue has a full bar and a menu of creative vegetarian entrees and snacks. [Mary-Suzanne]

A Valentine’s Day date night extravaganza by the Wanderlust Circus

A classic tale of love beneath the big top featuring Portland’s finest acrobats, aerialists, jugglers, and magicians, and a sumptuous 4-course feast from

Happy February, everyone. Already, signs that spring is coming are popping up- and every year, we get that one great batch of summerlike weather. But then, it’s back to horrible, horrible weather for a while. Oh well, get out your rain gear and come see some art!

By the time First Thursday comes around, we will have had two of the greatest holidays already:Groundhog Day, and Setsuban, the Japanese ceremony in which people throw beans at demons. I kid you not. It’s also Black History Month, President’s Day time of year, and…there’s some other holiday about halfway through the month which tends to be of certain interest.

Art is like a box of chocolates…

ART EVENTS NOT TO BE MISSED

This month’s list of events not to be missed is helped out by the Dill Pickle Club’s own Marc Moscato, who shared his opinions of sneak peaks of a few shows:

1) SIGNS OF CHANGE @ Pacific Northwest College of Art (1241 NW Johnson St) Hundreds of posters, photographs, moving images, audio clips, and ephemera bring to life over forty years of activism, political protest, and campaigns for social justice. Curated by Dara Greenwald and Josh MacPhee.

2) “Gestures of resistance” @ Museum of Contemporary Craft (724 NW Davis St) Rather than present a grouping of objects, the exhibition unfolds over its tenure at the Museum. Through a series of seven artist residencies, open conversations and a study center, the exhibition is a timely examination of what it means to create, to have personal agency, and to counter drives towards productivity and consumption through craft.

3) The 5th Annual Love Show @ Olympic Mills Commerce Center (107 SE Washington St) Opening Friday, February 12th, from 7pm-Midnight. Featuring 300 local artists. launchpadgallery.org

Learning to Love Yourself is the Greatest Love of All…

[M]ackin’s block of shameless self-promotion…

Okay, this is all the way on the other side of the river, and it’s not on First Thursday, but I did want to promote…

DRAW MY GIRLFRIEND

Each week, 2-4 live acoustic bands play while live models pose for you to draw, paint, or do balloon sculptures to. Featuring The Blair-Rich Project (my band!) and clowning by Dingo Dizmal. FREE!

This month at Sequential Art Gallery

{328 NW Broadway #113}

SELECTED WORKS BY DEREK STUBBS

February at Sequential Art Gallery will showcase the comics art of Derek Stubbs. Interested in more than just “final” art, Derek is intrigued by the process of creating. The “how” of the art is as fascinating to him as the “what.” To that end, his solo show at the gallery is his attempt to share the process of putting the pieces together. The show will open First Thursday on February 4th, 6-10pm, and run through the end of the month.

After a short stay at the New York State Psychiatric Institute in 2006, Derek found that marrying words and pictures was what he wanted to do with his life. The result of this has been his immersion into the world of comic art, and projects like TheMin, Mr. Popularity, Oh Snap! A Series on the Hazards of Portland, Filthy Comics and others. He moved from New York City–his home for the previous 15 years–to Portland in 2007, and is glad he did.

Derek has shown his work at COMICS TO THE PEOPLE! An Exhibition of Comic Book & Cartoon Art at the Portland Center for Performing Arts (April and May 2009), Stumptown Comics Fest (April 2009) and the Friends of Lauren and Austin Experience Art Show Benefit (August 2009). He will be exhibiting again at Stumptown Comics Fest 2010 this April.

A belated Happy New Year to you and yours, from me and mine. Already, 2010 (or as I prefer it, MMX… try it out; see if it catches on) appears to have hit the ground running, and I’d prefer to catch up now rather than later.

I proudly present to you eight events, shows, etc., going on this month that you ought to check out. Granted, one of them is an inventory clearance sale… but the shop in question belongs to my stepmom. Yes, I’m aware that that’s nepotism. And when you have your very own newsletter, you can promote your friends and family all you like too. ;)

Also? I’d like to extend congratulations to Aaron Duran (AKA Geek in the City), for joining the team at the Hollywood Things From Another World! He’s jumped into the job w/ both feet, and bringing some new ideas to the franchise (see the Magic the Gathering event listed below). Well done, Mr. Duran!

For a comprehensive list of things do to nearly every freakin’ day in our fair City of Roses, please visit our friends at www.PDXPipeline.com. They won’t steer you wrong.

But now you have the chance bawl in public with a few hundred fellow cry-babies because Iron Giant is our January Midnight Movie.

The doors open at 10pm and we’ll have a nostalgia bath warm and ready for you at 10:30. As always you have to be 21 or older and it costs a meager $3 to get in.

The new year is always a good time for a fresh start on things… and to wrap up all those projects you started last fall but put on the back burner over the winter holidays. The new website you see before you has been one of those slow-burning projects; I’ve been poking at a Wordpress layout over the last couple of months, but felt that it was now stable (and pretty) enough to start putting it out there and utilizing its functionality. If you notice anything glitching out, do let us know! And if there’s anything you’d like to see up on the Sequential Art website, let us know about that, too. There’s still a lot of content to upload, everything from working with the gallery to tales of shows past. Good thing I have a year before the next swarm of holidays! ;)

Also, a brief introduction: Hi, my name is Merrick. I started working with Sequential Art last summer, helping Kaebel get the place organized, prepping for First Thursdays, and making sure he eats dinner on event nights. I’ve also been overseeing much of the social networking–that’s practically a full-time job in itself–and investigating ways we can expand the reach of this humble Portland gallery. It’s an amazingly exciting business to be involved in (also, OMG comic books!), and I was both thrilled and humbled when Kaebel insisted that I was his co-curator(!) and not just his assistant. So, if I haven’t met you yet, come by some day and say hello, play some Magic, and check out the show.

We’ve also had [m]elissa step down from writing the monthly newsletter about First Thursday events, The [h]IT LIST, so that she can go out into the world and accomplish bigger, better things. Adventure into this vast, creative world, Melissa; just, please come see us on the occasional First Thursday! ;) Before she left, Melissa handed her list-making torch on to Rich Vail [M]ackin, who has stepped surely into the role. His first [h]IT LIST and the first list of MMX is already live–I mean, tomorrow is First Thursday–and we’re excited to have him on board for writing newsletters for the next year. At least, we think we’re excited…
