Places To Go, People To See How To Spend Your Time | October ‘08 edition • by Christina “Blue” Crow It’s October! I am so excited that it’s finally October! It’s time for leaves falling, sweaters, pumpkins, and – most importantly – dressing up! Well, if you’re anything like me, you don’t need it to be the month of October to have an excuse to dress up, much less like a superhero, but you’re probably not. So, in addition to Halloween, you’ve got plenty of reason to dress up, especially as a superhero. Portlandia prevails in spandex… Your faithful events informant, RECOMMENDATIONS You must come in a superhero or supervillain costume of your own creation. Need a little inspiration? Check out photos from previous events on the Alter Egos MySpace page or on flickr, then try hitting up the Goodwill bins, your friends’ closets, and the Leotard Store in Lloyd Mall. Yes, there is a leotard store in the mall. For more interesting colored spandex, however, I’d say start searching the internet and order tomorrow. Can you guess an added bonus of putting together a great costume for this party? That’s right, you’ll be ready for Halloween later in the month. October 11th, $5 ($10 w/o costume) – remember to bring extra cash for drink, food, raffle tickets and pedicab rides! 7:00pm-11:59pm, www.myspace.com/alteregosparty October 3rd – 5th, see website for the complete schedule of all movies and events, $46 for a weekend pass, hplfilmfestival.com “Oregon Manifest is the collective vision of Portland, Oregon’s cycling and creative communities, who’ve come together to dream up and develop the most original, spirited and spectacle-laden boutique bike show in the nation. From Portland, in Portland, with love.” October 10th-12th, FREE, All Ages, www.oregonmanifest.com As an added bonus to 24 Hour Comics Day this year, PNCA is battling Cosmic Monkey Comics to see which group can produce more pages in the same 24 hour period! The PNCA group will be at PNCA (duh), upstairs in the Charles Voorhies Library (not so duh), while the Cosmic Monkey Comics crew will be slaving away at Cosmic Monkey Comics (again with the duh). This event is free and open to the public, however space is limited. To guarantee your spot with the PNCA crew, send an email to Neal Skorpen (nskorpen@comcast.net) with your name, and the name and phone number of the person that will drive you home. All attendees must arrange to be picked up after the event and provide contact information for the driver. To join up with the Cosmic Monkey crew, RSVP to cosmicmonkeycomics@earthlink.net or 503-517-9050 (they’re capping it at 20 artists). October 18th at 10:00am – 19th at 10:00am, FREE, pnca.edu; www.cosmicmonkeycomics.com October 1st – November 5th, $8 (general admission), see website for full schedule, www.nwfilm.org October | 1-7 October | 8-14 October | 15-21 October | 22-31
