THE [h]IT LIST | JUNE 2008

June 5th, 2008

Hey there. This is Kaebel filling in for [M] this month; [M] will be back on duty for July.

So before we get into the metric ****-ton of art shows to see this month… and believe me, there is a ****-ton… let’s start with this month’s show at Sequential Art…

HIS MONTH AT SEQUENTIAL ART {328 NW Broadway 113}
Wednesday Members Preview: June 4th, 7-9 pm
First Thursday Opening: June 5th, 6-10 pm

PAUL GUINAN · MULTIMEDIA MAN

At first glance, this month’s installation could easily be mistaken for a group show of several artists. You may find yourself standing, mouth agape, when you realize the 60+ pieces of art are all the work of the eponymous multimedia man, Mr. PAUL GUINAN.

The Chicago-born Guinan’s artistic career includes work as a storyboard artist, cinematographer, illustrator for an ad agency, kinetic sculptor, mural painter, production designer, radio DJ, model maker, silkscreener, and award-winning TV variety show host.

Guinan, partnering w/ wife Anina Bennett, also bears the distinction of creating the first female action hero in American pop culture in 1989 with Heartbreakers, a science fiction series exploring the social fallout of cloning & genetic engineering.

MULTIMEDIA MAN serves as a comprehensive exhibition of Guinan’s work in comic books, photography & “Paintography” (Paul’s description of his digital painting style), as well as samples of his traditional paintings, and his kitbash* model work.

MULTIMEDIA MAN opens today, June 5th, from 6-10pm, and will be on display throughout the month of June. Gallery hours are Saturdays, 11am-5pm, or by appointment. MULTIMEDIA MAN closes June 28th.

*KITBASH: Kitbashing is a practice whereby a new toy or model is created by modifying commercial toys or model kits. Pieces may be added or subtracted to a custom project or to another kit. Kitbashing came to the attention of a wider public via the fine modelwork with the Thunderbirds TV series (1965), the film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), and (especially) Star Wars (1977). Many of the spaceship models created for these incorporated details from tank, speedboat and car kits.

Anna Todaro & Nicole Linde @ Vino Paradiso
{417 NW 10th Ave} · (from Vino Paradiso’s press release) Nicole Linde (Etsy name “Brittle Star”) and Anna Todaro (Etsy name “Star Child”) were not yet acquainted prior to the arrangement of this show, but it turns out the two young Portland artists have more in common than the similarities of their pseudonyms. Their work alternately compliments and resembles each other’s due to their common penchant for creating images of odd looking creatures in vivid colors. Both Anna and Nicole are adept at the portrayal of the whimsical veering towards the slightly creepy. The similarities of subject matter are contrasted by their extremely different use of media. Anna uses the more traditional format of acrylic paint and ink on canvas and paper. Nicole’s work is done in a digital format, incorporating her drawings and various random photos to create digital collages. She then prints the images on paper, mounts them on panels, and coats them in epoxy.

Amy Ruppel’s “Migratory Patterns” @ Grassy Knoll

{123 NW 2nd Ave} · (from Grassy Knoll’s press release) The Grassy Knoll Gallery presents “Migratory Patterns”, a solo exhibition and installation by Amy Ruppel - a unique opportunity to view Amy’s charming illustrations and hand-drawn details on a large scale. Graphic renderings form the stages where her iconic mixed-media paintings nest along side embellished wooden sculptures. Even more exciting for those already familiar with Amy’s work or for the multitudes of crafters out there, “Migratory Patters” is a first time outlet for Amy to experiment with fabric. Amy boldly moves into a brand new medium - handprinted fabric using a wood block technique, from which she’s offering one-of-a-kind pillows and fabric by the yard. There is no denying Amy’s knack for capturing the essence of simple pleasures. Her pieces are tiny snapshots, glimpses into natural worlds. With thoughtful lines and colors, she creates perfect homes for her woodland creatures to inhabit. Whether it’s a surprised baby bird or a deer perched on a fine strand of wheat, her characters are nothing if not enchanting. Each piece is a moment, beautifully uncomplicated, for the viewer to savor.

{20 NW 5th Ave} · (from FWC’s press release) June First Thursday, Floating World will present a gallery show with the works of Peter Bagge, who will be in town June 28-29 for PNCA’s Graphic Novel Intensive.  Fellow alternative cartoonists J.R. PLACES TO GO, PEOPLE TO SEE - PDX | MAY 2008

May. As in, “May this month be half as cool as last month.” Last month had superheroes and comics galore, but May does stand to be as awesome. You may be wondering, “Wait! How is this possible, Blue?” Well, it could have a little something to do with what you’ll find plenty of in the Notable Mentions - Zombies!

THE [h]IT LIST • FIRST THURSDAY - OLD TOWN CHINATOWN

FIRST THURSDAY | May 2008 edition {beta}

Dare we hope that spring has sprung? Or is this yet another one of those seasonal jokes our dear Portlandia is so fond of? It may not quite be time to pack away your rain gear [is there such a thing here?], but it is definitely time to find those sunglasses. The cherry blossoms may be off the trees, but there is still plenty of art to go around!

FIRST THURSDAY | April 2008 edition {beta}

The [m]arvellous [m]adame [M] here to tell you that, in case you forgot, April showers bring May flowers. Although, if you live in Portland, it’s more likely that April showers bring May showers, and June showers and if you’re lucky, maybe a couple of days of sun in July and August right before getting right back to that shower business in September.

Why do I live here, again?

Right! The fantastic art scene!

PLACES TO GO, PEOPLE TO SEE | MARCH 2008

March 2nd, 2008

It’s that time again. Many a person will tout March as the month to “march on” and “move forward” - I’m no exception. I’ve already received 3 mix CDs from friends all with this theme and I imagine I’ll get a few more within the next couple of weeks - and I’m cool with that. Some clichés come into place because they just really, really fit. Because most people have defaulted on their New Year’s resolutions, got dumped to close to Valentine’s Day (or hadn’t any love to begin with) and need to make a mental comeback. With that in mind, I present you with a lists of events full of rock, full of force, full of intensity, full of fun.
