Sequential Art Gallery presents “Munchies,” an exhibit featuring illustrations of body positive and pot-friendly women by local artist Jessica Olinger. The show opens Thursday, July 2nd with an artist’s reception from 6pm to 10pm.
“Munchies” commemorates the legalization of marijuana this month in the state of Oregon. As an artist faced with issues of body-image and pain management as an OMMP, Olinger celebrates stoned ladies of all shapes and sizes. As the body-positive movement bolsters and marijuana use becomes socially acceptable, Olinger hopes to inspire those to love themselves without the fear of being stigmatized. Through her watercolor illustrations, mini-comics and coloring book, Olinger shows that everyone is sexy despite social constructs.
Olinger is a library attendant, freelance artist and volunteer at Sequential Art Gallery. Raised in the rural desert of eastern Washington, Jessica has enjoyed living in Portland for nearly a decade. As a student of comic studies and visual rhetoric, Jessica will set sail to pursue a graduate degree at the University of Dundee in Scotland in the fall of 2016. “Munchies” will be on display throughout the month of July, with gallery hours on Monday’s 2-6pm, Saturday’s 11-5pm, and by appointment. The exhibit will close Saturday, August 1st.
